Bangin' and jammin' (the scientific term for listening to music while engaging in intercourse) happens naturally only once in a blue moon, and for those moments, one must be prepared. Load up those Spotify playlists with enough tunes from the following contemporary artists, and you'll be rocking to the rhythm before you know it.
1. Old Solange
While Solange’s new album “A Seat at the Table” is no doubt a masterpiece, it’s a bit difficult to feel sexy while in the background there are powerful spoken interludes weaving a challenging confrontation to racial inequality in the U.S. Plus, the album deserves your undivided attention, so playing it during sexy times would be doing everyone a disservice. That being said, go back a few years in Solange’s repertoire, and you’ve got a highly sensual (and just plain wonderful, TBH) album in “True,” released in 2012. Though it’s a short one, this album has such jams as “Lovers in the Parking Lot” and “Locked in Closets”—and, depending on how much of a sense of humor you and your partner(s) have, “Losing You,” “Don’t Let Me Down,” and “Some Things Never Seem to Fucking Work” are gems, as well. Let old Solange’s new age-soul-funk-R&B-pop genius take you far away into a land of happy, sexy goodness.
If you’re in the mood for something really steamy, alt-J’s “Every Other Freckle” is a highly descriptive song about all the sexy things lead singer Joe Newman fantasizes doing to his ~lover~. With lyrics like “devour me” in the hook and “turn you inside out and lick you like a crisp packet” in the first verse, this song is ideal background noise for any adult sleepover.
3. Joss Stone
With Joss, it’s less about the lyrics and more about the general sultriness of her voice and style. Her silky, jazzy voice will get you goin’ with tunes like “4 and 20,” “Put Your Hands on Me,” “Super Duper Love,” and her sexy update to the classic “L-O-V-E.”
4. John Legend
Does this one really need any explanation? John just oozes sexuality, so it’s not difficult to find a great banger (lol, get it?) from him. As an R&B artist at his core, he’s got a range of sexy styles that can work for a variety of preferences; if you’re more into the gushy, romantic stuff, check out his classic “All of Me.” If you’re a bit cheekier and more playful, go for the sensual sounds of “Everybody Knows” or “Maxine.”
My personal queen of raw sexuality, Rihanna is always great for a bedside jam. Heat up the mood if you’re feeling edgy and suggestive with basically anything from ANTI (one of the world’s most underrated albums, just by the way), but don’t forget to throw in those RiRi throwbacks like “Talk That Talk,” “Only Girl (In The World),” “Umbrella,” “Good Girl Gone Bad,” and maybe even some “Shut Up and Drive” depending on how frisky you’re feeling?
7. Frank Ocean
Few things will melt my heart quicker than a little Frank Ocean. As a bisexual person, Frank’s openness about his queerness (and his bisexuality in particular! Hello, “Chanel”) makes him an icon in my eyes. For some steamy moments, crank some “Self Control,” “Sierra Leone,” “Nights” and just let Frank’s slightly raspy, always sweet voice take you away.
